It’s that time of year again, where Christmas is just around the corner. And we all know what that means: loads of food, over the top decorations, and plans with family members.
Although we see big “magical” family gatherings in Christmas movies, that can be unrealistic for some of us.
If I have learnt anything from being estranged from my own family, it’s that you can feel expectations from others to be around family during Christmas. Even if that means pushing underlying issues aside just to create the illusion of a “happy” family.
But why put yourself through the pain of pretending?
I would rather option for a glass of wine on the couch whilst binging my favourite program.
Many people can find Christmas a hard period of the year especially if they have lost their relationship with family. If this is you, don’t worry, you are not alone. There are still ways to make your day special.
You don’t have to go overboard to have fun, but there is nothing stopping you from creating new traditions and beautiful memories.
There are always ways to treat yourself and some even in the comfort of your pajamas.
Here are eight tips.
#1. Make sure you have all your favourite food and drinks in the house.
#2. Buy some decorations, it doesn’t need to be expensive. You can be crafty with your ideas. Example: buy some inexpensive fairy lights and stick them in glass jars (make sure they are safe to use) and put them around the house.
#3. Purchase a gift for yourself like your favourite face mask, hair mask, candles or bath bomb.
#4. Create your favorite breakfast on the day (personally I’m a big fan of pancakes).
#5. Snuggle on the couch with a hot chocolate (use real chocolate melted down, that always makes the experience even better) and have a movie marathon.
#6. Light nicely scented candles and enjoy a face mask with a glass of wine (or two).
#7. Learn to make your favourite cocktail and enjoy it with your favorite snack.
#8. Buy some homemade craft kits like candles, dreamcatchers, or paintings, just to name a few.
